Words in Practice

I believe that language is never incidental. The way something is said is inseparable from what it means, and voice (real and precise and living) is not invented but uncovered through patience, through practice, through a willingness to keep returning to the page. This is true of my own writing. It is equally true of everything I do with and for others.

The Offerings

I work across writing, editing, and long-term creative development with writers who are ready to go deeper into their work, and with brands who feel the gap between what they do and what they say. Below is a guide to what that can look like. If something feels close but not quite named, existing in the in-between, please get in touch and we can begin a conversation of bringing your vision to life.

  • For writers with a substantial project that needs a creative partner over time, and for brands building their language world from the ground up. This is the most expansive of my offerings — long, generative, collaborative work.

I hold the larger vision of what you are building, read the arc as it develops, ask the questions that open the work up, and help shape what something is becoming. As you bring commitment and work, I bring consistent creative presence, honest response, and devoted attention to reflect what you cannot yet see yourself.

Typically a minimum of three months. Fortnightly or monthly sessions of 60–90 minutes, with reading, written notes, and lighter touch-points between sessions included.

    From £250 / month.

  • One-to-one work with writers who are looking to go deeper into their practice. I read your work in advance of each session and come prepared to engage with it with true attention — the craft, the voice, the particular challenges of sustaining a writing life over time. Where Development & Direction builds the project, mentorship builds the writer, supporting your growing confidence, independence, and creative authority on the page.

Sessions run approximately 90 minutes, with reading and written feedback included.

From £95 per session / £340 for a block of four.

  • For brands who sense that their language isn't quite holding what they mean. Through deep listening, research into your existing materials, and careful development of voice principles and tone guidelines, I build the language system that holds your brand coherently so that everything you say sounds like you, precisely and consistently. This is a defined project with a deliverable document you own and return to.

Typically four weeks. From £400 for a full brand voice document — smaller projects from £200.

  • Essays, long-form content, website copy, and brand writing grounded in research and shaped by voice. I bring a literary sensibility to everything I write, thinking about rhythm, precision, and what a piece of writing is doing beneath its surface function. For those who want their words to carry meaningful weight and create lasting connection with a reader.

Quoted on scope and word count — from £250 per project.

  • Close, careful attention to your work at every level. Proofreading for the final surface pass; copy editing for consistency and clarity; line editing for voice, rhythm, and precision; structural editing for the larger questions of form and direction. I will tell you honestly which your work needs.

Proofreading from £60 per 5,000 words.

Copy editing from £90 per 5,000 words.

Line editing from £120 per 5,000 words.

Structural editing from £150 per project — quoted on scope.

  • Open to conversations about collaborative projects, bespoke commissions, and work that doesn't fit neatly elsewhere. If you have something in mind, I would love to hear about it.

    Quoted on enquiry.

  • “I have been working with Jess for a while now. She has saved me time, money and energy. She has a unique vision for growth in all areas of business. She has helped me organise online platforms, move to more digital modalities and adjust my business to fit into a modern world. With both the mundane organising of logistics and the vision for growth I’ve found Jess invaluable. I highly recommend her for her literary brain and organisation prowess. I will continue to use Jess for projects in the future when they arise.”

Let’s Work Together

I work with those who understand language is a way of being in the world, not just a tool but a texture — writers at a threshold, brands who feel the gap between what they do and what they say, and creative practitioners looking to shape something lasting.

If this sounds like you, I would love to hear from you and see how we might work together.
